Archives For lifepath church

A few weeks ago we took our youth to the “awakening conference” in RI. It was fantastic. Great preaching, great worship and great fellowship. We had a good amount of kids with us and we were very excited about what was to come of this trip.
I have been to many conferences and most are like energy drinks. A quick high. However this one last year was different so we went in with high expectations.

There was some themes that stuck out to me:

  1. You need to have the presence of God in your ministry
  2. You need to be dedicated to prayer
  3. Don’t get discouraged
  4. Let God do His thing

Every bit of that is dead on. I have heard many times in ministry that if the presence of the Lord is there then people will respond. The problem is that we always have this assumption that this means a good response. However there are a few huge things that we have to realize.

  1. Where the presence of the Lord is there will also be conviction of the Holy spirit
  2. The deeper you get into the word and the more challenging the more people have to make choices as to what to do with that info

We stepped up our Youth ministry as of late to challenge the kids beyond just reading the bible. Beyond going through the motions.

If you bite an apple you can choose to spit it out before it nourishes you.

In the same sense if you read the word or hear it you can spit it out before it nourishes your spirit.

I know our kids have been convicted. We have lost many kids since trying to be more real and this has been discouraging. Thing is having 60 kids who come to meetings just to check out the opposite sex and never ever attempt to apply the word is worthless. Having 2 kids who are really trying to see what God can do in their life and affecting others is priceless. This is currently what we are dealing with. We literally went from 60 kids to 5 in 6 months.

Now numbers can be discouraging, but that honestly is not my concern. I don’t care about even having 0 kids coming. What I care about is these kids are hurting. I know they have felt love in the church, but it is so hard to let go of hate, bitterness, sex, drama, baggage, etc and just give it to God. I pray for them daily.

What I have noticed though is this:

We as leaders can go through the motions, but at a certain point we are just casting pearls before swine. That’s when programs and events and misc stuff need to end and prayer needs to be taken to a new level. Because it is only through prayer that God can heal our land.

I have noticed something interesting about free will…
When God convicts we have two choices:

Repent or Run

Right now my youth are turning to run so we are turning to more prayer. This may mean we are putting a halt to our youth meetings to regroup and let God move because the time we put into preparing the word for people who don’t want to hear it can be better served in coming before the throne on behalf of the least, the lost and the lonely in my church.

Its time for another setlist…uh…list

Of course this is part of the wonderful carnival of joy at mckinnons pad.

Lets see…trying to do this one from memory which seems to be a little shaky at best. lol

Sunday Set List

February 23, 2009 — 5 Comments

This is a part of the wonderful world of the infamous mckinnonblog carnival of Joy

This sunday was a pretty freakin awesome sunday.

We had some huge news this week that I will be sharing more about soon. It’s one part of the reason why i have been absent from the net for the last week. Our church found a building and we signed the lease. WOO HOO.

This is some awesome stuff because God did this hands down. We will be moving from a church building to a storefront on the main drag here and I can’t be more excited. Again more to come on that.

So needless to say the excitement in the building was infectious.

Here is the set this week

Processional:
The Glorious Impossible – Carl Cartee (C)

Praise:
Bless His Name – Tony Sanchez
Everlasting God – Brenton Brown
You Are Good – Kari Jobe

Offering:
Glory to God – Steve Fee

Communion:
Center – Charlie Hall
Healer – Planetshakers

Recessional (closing):
Everything Glorious – Crowder

Let me just say one thing. If you are not doing “the glorious impossible” in your church I feel sorry for you. 🙂

Mark Driscoll on Nightline

January 29, 2009 — 2 Comments

Great interview with mark driscoll. I love his writing and teaching. I don’t always agree, but I also can’t name anybody I always agree with any way. God is using Mark in a great way.

a ton to read, but if you want real…and real community…this is as real as it gets…

There are a ton of naysayers about the whole blogging thing.

have you heard them before?

In the last 3 years have built real freindships online with people I have never met and I am floored by it.

Is it odd?

Of course, but often times when i’m dealing with something or God is dealing with something they are my go to people.

I could go and rattle off the people that are like that…but for the sake of not having a boring post i want to mention a few.

Our family is dealing with some interesting things lately and our church is going thru some really wild God things.

I can’t post about some if it, but other things I have shared a tad.

We are going through a money crunch right now. Probably like everybody else.

Time is always a factor. I am a stay at home dad with 3 boys, my wife works and I work doing design. Problem is my design business is pretty much depleted. There are other interesting things there too, but that is a big factor..

I am the volunteer (non paid) worship director, youth director (with partner), designer, Youth service director, go to mens meetings etc etc… Am I neglecting my family? No. I have margin there, but does that take away from making money being im home with my kids? You bet.

On top of this God is having our church move (new building) almost like a replant.

Our church has about 75 members and 65 coming on a sunday…yes thats small.

we started a youth service with 2 volunteers and running youth group with about 10 kids…with all of the above life issues and more…

and God has 40-60 kids coming to the youth service..

Are you with me? 65 people in church and 40-60 kids (ton not christian) coming to a youth church!

So I’ve been struggling with worrying about money and my family and God’s work in the church and God is just pouring out these hurting kids and those who he has entrusted to work with them have thier hands tied.

Of course there is more, but im not going to go into it…

At the worship community we started a pure praise study

Going through it and reading and interacting in the devotional is giving me clarity in my faith that God has this all in his hands..

I have had talks with my Re:create roomie Fred Mckinnon and have been able to share with him my heart and visa versa.

This is not fake friendship..this is real folks..

Alastair has noticed my disconcerting tweets and messages and has been all over tracking me down all over the web to talk and encourage.

there have been others locally who have messaged me on the blog with pray too.

Then last night after I had a RI wide meeting with youth pastors from 7 churches (YES WOW!) to pray I got home and there were messages from My longest internet brother Conner asking to talk via video. We couldn’t because my family was sleeping and I talk too loud. But we talked for over an hour via chat and prayed for eachother via…yes via chat.

And I really prayed..His family is hurting too and it was awesome just to cover each other with the blood of Jesus and connect.

Readers…I need to stress something…

God has everything in control..

But I am scared, worried, full of fear, anxiety and also full of awe of God and excitement.

If you don’t get blogging, facebook, twitter, tokbox etc etc etc…let me tell you…the body of christ is the body weather its in person or over a webcam. And my connection..my community online is so so so important to me and vital to me not wanting to quit everything daily.

If you haven’t connected for real…You need to because I have realized that there are like minded people all over the world that can speak into my life and I in thiers and my vision and ministry is different because of it.

Pray for me, my family, and my church. Pray that God touches RI with his Love and connect with me..

Come out of the lurking and talk. I need it and let me tell you…You do too!
