Mad at the World: 1987-1998

This is a little known band these days, but probablly in the top 5 Christian bands that have influenced me. They were a band that always reinvented their sound. The first CD was almost like Depeche Mode and Tears for fears…later they went into Goth and hard rock ending their music foray with a 60’s 70’s feel. Brilliant stuff here.
Lyrically it they were very challenging dealing with things like suicide, sex, addiction, drugs and ultimatly hope. It is kind of hard to find the CD’s but many were reprinted and can be found on amazon and other sites like www.radrockers.com.

I recently found out Founder and lead singer of MATW Roger Rose is at it again with some demos online.

This is a band the shaped the way for Christian rock and really needs to be revisited often. Go buy the Cd’s

Here they are live…audio isnt hot, but this song rocks!

Fleming and John: 1994-present

Fleming and John is a musical husband and wife team, Fleming McWilliams and John Mark Painter, currently living in Nashville, Tennessee, United States. They have 2 CD’s out and have finally announced on their Myspace that they are working on a new Cd. Considering the last one was in 1998 I cant wait. In the mean time they have worked with many top artists like ben folds doing recording producing and playing on others CD’s. John has also done some movie soundtracks. For a while they got almost famous. They even got on Conan O brian… Fleming has one of the best female voices in the industry and they sadly didnt get much credit. On their second CD John plays something like 60 instruments. They are amazing.I saw them live at Cornerstone festival in IL i think in 1993. What an amazing show. Here voice is captivating. It is operatic yet rocky. they have straight rock feel and very experimental on top.

IONA: 1988-present

Iona is a celtic band straight of of Ireland. They didn’t really have much notoriety untilThe time when Celtic music started becoming mainstream thanks to things like Braveheart and Enya. What sets Iona apart from the likes of Enya, The Coors, Clanaad? This band is a Christian band. They have amazing lyrics and love the Lord. They have the traditional Celtic style music with the pipes and hand drums, but they add a new flair to it. Progressive Rock. Think the technicality of Dream Theater then mix in the vocals of a more powerful Enya and throw in a some Out of the Grey. I Got to see this band only once and it stands out as one of the top 5 shows I have ever been to. Go listen and then buy everything. This band is brilliant. The Vocals are amazing. The guitar work is virtuoso with a mix of the edge and satriani. Tehn add in all of the Irish stuff and it blows your mind.

Welcome to the first ever “music you should be listening to post”. This one is a doozy.

THE CHOIR: 1985-present

If you haven’t heard of them you may be aware of some of the projects they have worked on. Drummer and lead singer were both involved and creators of City on a Hill projects. They are also in the Lost dogs.

The choir is one of the greatest and long standing Christian bands of all time. They were huge back in the 80’s and they even to this day keep reinventing themselves. They are one of the most influential unsung heroes in christian rock. They have a U2 kinda feel and came out around the same time. Airy guitars with killer delay, amazing bass lines, a drummer that tells a story with his instrument, and a guy who plays a midi control woodwind. I have seen them in concert about 5 times and I consider them 1 of the top 2 bands of all time.
If you haven’t checked them out there are many CD’s to choose from and they are all amazing.

Here they are at cornerstone in 97..I saw them in 93 at cornerstone. Enjoy…Have you heard them?
