#recreate Matthew Ward

Matthew Ward came to Recreate on a whim just to see what it was all about and to meet some new people. He was not scheduled to sing, but they had a great time of honoring our Christian Music heritage and asked him to sing something. Here is what he sang.

“If we don’t recover the western model of mysticism we will continue to lose people to the eastern model” Ian Morgan Cron

WOW…lets this stuff soak in..

Ian Morgan Cron

All art is speaking in tongues

Francis closeness to the trinity was birthed out of prayer

He co-experienced life with God the beauty of his creation

Every human transaction is God soaked

Contemplative Spirituality came from the Desert Fathers
All they did was pray and sought to be one with God

We need to get past the congregational division and create an atmosphere of generosity

Spiritual disciplines are created to bring you into the jet stream of grace

Christianity is about learning to see what is already there

Read “seven story mountain” “conjectures of a guilty bystander”

Read Martin Lair “into the silent land”

Read Fr. John mains “word into silence”

to repent means also to go beyond the mind that you have

“Silence is God’s First language”

One of the great dangers to the post modern stuff is we have no mystic theology

We need ideas but they can’t take you into the wilderness of God

Most of us go through life taping fruit on trees

Our job as artists is to stand still and be astonished and help others see clearly what they always felt vaguely

Social action and contemplation are a disaster without each other

The church is full of action right now and missing the contemplation

with absence of contemplative life we have Mindless fundamentalists who have an addiction to certainty

Constant bombardment of sound crushes sprit of congregation and effects their communion with the spirit of God

Listening to Dr. Guthrie talk- awesome..Here is my notes.

Dr. Steven Guthrie

The two halves of worship? Spirit and Truth
Thinking words/preaching truth

Worship arts vs teaching staff – Don’t speak the same language

Creates potential tension

St. Augustine: Loved music so much he was afraid of the danger of pleasure of it effecting his mind. He said the ear must serve the mind.
When the music moves me more than the words …I would prefer to have not heard it.

He was torn between emotion/physical delight and truth/reason

Post modern values esthetic/emotion over truth and reason

Both ways of thinking still cause division

The problem is thinking these two mindsets are separate or opposed

The undivided Human

Fact is our emotions and reason are not seperate

we reason and speak esthetically and create rationally

Rhythm of our voice is not separate from it’s meaning

/ˈprɒsədi/ Show Spelled Pronunciation [pros-uh-dee] Show IPA Pronunciation
1.     the science or study of poetic meters and versification.
2.     a particular or distinctive system of metrics and versification: Milton’s prosody.
Linguistics. the stress and intonation patterns of an utterance.

Emotional content and inflection change the meaning of our words

Knowledge in scripture
“and Adam knew his wife and she conceived”
In this physical act Adam came to know her in physical and cognitive way

Music and arts are a part of the Gospel proclamation of the church

Music and arts are wholly a part of the “truth” and are used to teach the church as well.

Choose music and drama based on what the church needs to hear not just because it’s a good song.

Look for ways melody and rhythm and color can announce the good news of Jesus Christ.

The prosody of the proclamation

Songs and art done in different ways can teach the truth as well as marry emotion to the Holiness of God.

Music can expound on the words

The knowing of doing

Act on the truth (Exodus 6:6-7)

In doing something God shows his love for us
In us doing something we reveal who God is.

Model worship and humility

Serve the church and listen

It may be the most important thing we do is allow the congregation to hear each other sing and be “One Voice”

Re:Create – Day 1

I’m sitting in my hotel room right now and its the morning after day one of Re:create. Fred Mckinnon is sleeping and the room is shaking. Ha…just kidding.

What an awesome first day. I’ll try to give a quick recap so far and hopefully I don’t forget anything. I will have to go back at a later date to add links to people when I mention them.

Lets start right at the beginning. I get to wake up wicked early and drive 45 minutes to the Providence airport. After 1 hour in airport and 3 hours on plane I arrive in Nashville. When I come off the excalator I am greated by typical billboards and advertisemnts in the glass cases. However in this airport there are guitars in them. YUM!

I waited around a bit and then saw Fred Mckinnon coming down and it was awesome to finally meet that guy and spend the day getting to know him.

We grabbed our car and headed off to lunch and bloggers meetup at Meridees. We got there and a worship pastor named Louis and Jan were there already. next up were a few people (can’t remember thier names). Then came in Chris (from canada) and Alastair (snowjunkie). I was so awesome to meet those guys finally. Lets see…Recording artist Mckendre was there and got to talk to him a bit as well. Randy Elrod also stopped in and it was great to finally meet him in person.

Out of the blue Matthew Daniel from 4thejourney came in. He was not going to conference but saw the tweets and saw fred and I were going to be there so he stopped in. That was an awesome surprise to get to finally meet him as well.

We headed off to the hotel afterwards to get some rest before the rest of the night.

Ok After this it was time for a meet and great at a historic college of sorts. That was pretty wild. Tons of people. It was quite overwhelming actually and I’mt looking forward to meeting these people again today in a less hectic situation.

At the meet and great I met up with some amazing people. Again…No links..Too early…

Met Los, John Voelz, Rich Kirk., Brent and Tam, Kim and Niel, and more!

Then…for me the highlight. I got to meet and hang out with Maatthew Ward of 2nd chapter of acts. Now I am not one to get star struck, but matthew Is one of the guys that I have always loved since the beginning of time so it was awesome to get to meet and hang out with him.

We had dinner at a mexican joint called SOL and sat with Randy from Skorinc. That was fun talking design and wordpress with him.

And then on to an amazing Jazz concert from the adam Nitti band. These guys blew us away.

check him out!

Now it’s on to day 2…coming soon
